You, Omphalos
You, Omphalos
You, Omphalos (2017) is a carved sculptural work by Jennifer Seas made from a solid Himalayan salt lick. Each side features a single letter — Y, O, U — carved into the salt and filled with gold leaf. The letterforms are softened, nearing illegibility; more like runes or devotional symbols than literal text.
This object acts as a talismanic center — an omphalos, or navel — evoking themes of origin, nourishment, erosion, and queer inheritance. Gold leaf adorns the carved letters like sacred ornamentation, while the salt itself dissolves over time, resisting permanence.
Like much of Seas’ practice, You, Omphalos blends the sacred with the bodily, the symbolic with the material. It is at once an altar, a body, and a memory — a relic of care and contradiction. Time will alter it, and in doing so, complete it.
