You, Not You (2017) is a sculptural installation by Jennifer Seas composed of six individual letterforms spelling various versions of “YOU” rendered in materials including paper mache, wood, cuttlefish ink, salt, and cast black glass. The forms vary in size and weight, creating a visual dissonance that mirrors the emotional instability of the address.

Several letters are hand-formed and painted in dense black cuttlefish ink, then encrusted with salt — a material that both preserves and corrodes. The culmination is a solid cast glass “YOU” with a horizontal strikethrough — bold, weighty, and partially negated.

This work materializes a fractured sense of identity and care. It is not a single “you,” but a splintered sequence — one that shifts from vulnerability to insistence, from presence to redaction. You, Not You is a confrontation with the language of intimacy and estrangement, rendered physically unstable, materially rich, and symbolically potent.
